Alymers Team race

Summary

Sunday, April 12:

After yesterday's sporty conditions at the Central 4, it was almost a relief to have a concerningly calm day in the forecast. However, the sea breeze arrived much earlier than forecast, beginning to fill in on the river by 9 am, with optimism further buoyed by watching the wind direction shift from 20° to 90° at the airport between 9 and 9:30. Conditions were sailable by the competitors' meeting, and teams headed out to the racecourse after a brief delay to create a new round after discovering a no-show at the competitors meeting. One race was abandoned at mark 3 due to a persistent righty.

Racing ran smoothly and efficiently almost all day, with with the breeze mostly in the 4-8kt range, and only one major course adjustment to widen the "N" and make it possible to tweak the turning marks to keep things square without having to move the start or finish lines. One race was abandoned at mark 3 due to a persistent righty. While there was temptation to abandon a couple of other races as lulls rolled down the course, the races seemed to remain fair and the RC and NEISA rep managed to hold the temptation for perfection at bay and preserve the greater good of completing a full round in the short Sunday-only format. The full round-robin of 36 races was completed by 2:25, at which time it was determined that the best use of the remaining time was to break two ties between RWU/BU and BAB/MSM. Unfortunately, the sail-off rounds created a new tie between BAB and RWU that we were not able to break.

No capsizes occurred, and no protests were filed before the time limit. One boat experienced a breakdown in race 32, but redress was not requested as the breakdown was on the winning team.

It is very exciting to see more and more teams showing interest in team racing, with huge growth in interest in this event over the past few years. We hope this trend continues and that we can make this a 12 team, 2-day event next year.

Big thanks to Dane Phippen '23 for running the start boat and Nick Memoli '20 for running the finish boat Thanks to Nick Johnstone from Salve Regina for being NEISA Rep. --Jared Reineck, PRO
