SAISA Open Singlehanded Championship

A competitors meeting was held at 1530 following the completion of the Women’s singlehanded championship. Owing to a poor forecast for Sunday it was decided to get in as much racing as possible on Saturday afternoon. Sailors were sent out to the racecourse at 1600 and after an initial wind delay the breeze filled in strongly from the northwest, driven by building storm clouds over land. Luckily the storms held off and two races were sailed in WNW breeze of 12-14 kts and two more in a westerly breeze of 6-9 kts before the winds began to fade. A 5th race was started but had to be abandoned. The fleet was sent in at 18:40.

The day began under a postponement due to flat calm conditions on Biscayne Bay. At around 1130 a seabreeze began to develop and the fleet was sent out at noon. Race 5 of the series started at 1230 in ESE winds of 5-6 kts, and the breeze built to 9 kts and then dropped to 6 kts during races 6-8. An approaching thunderstorm forced an abandonment of race 9 and the fleet was quickly sent ashore at 1430. The regatta was called at 1450 due to continued lightning strikes in the area and little prospect for any further sailing. No protests were filed. The racing was very tight with only 4 points separating the three podium finishers. Congratulations to Will Rucker of College of Charleston for the victory and earning an automatic berth to the 2026 ICSA Open Singlehanded Championship.
