Thomas H. Stafford Jr. Trophy

Summary

Saturday, February 21:

For the second annual Thomas H. Stafford, Jr. Trophy Regatta, teams gathered on the Lake Crabtree waterfront as the last vestiges of rain moved on leaving cloudy skies and calm water. Following a welcome greeting from the eponymous Dean Tom Stafford and a quick skippers' meeting, the regatta went on an immediate delay pending the arrival of wind. About 45 minutes later, a 4-5mph breeze began to fill in from due south and the race committee set a course and competitors launched, ready to start racing. In the first set for A-Division, two initial races were completed and two attempted races were abandoned before the wind died. Competitors were returned to shore to wait and despite the delay, shoreside, the vibes were immaculate. Great camraderie and hanging out between all of the teams on the waterfront helped pass the time and as the early afternoon arrived, so too did the breeze. After finishing a third race in A-Division, B-Division sailors launched in hopes of completing a rotation. As the sun broke through the clouds, the breeze shifted east and filled in enough for the indefatigable and patient race committee to complete three races, making the event official. Congratulations to the home team, NC State Wolfpack on the regatta win, with close competition from the Clemson Tigers, and the also-home team Duke Blue Devils rounding out the podium. No breakdowns were experienced and no protests filed. Races averaged 13 minutes on W4 courses. Thanks to the race committee, mark boat, photo boat, and all of the volunteers who helped make the Stafford Trophy Regatta successful.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
