Saturday's racing at the McIntyre could not have been nicer. A lovely 7-15 knot southerly graced the turning basin and allowed racing to flow unencumbered for almost six hours with very few course adjustments. Moreover, the vibes were at an all time high as those sailing competed hard yet did not lose sight of the gratitude found when team racing with your friends.
Several PCC sailors even jumped in to swim after a turtled boat when those originally sailing the vessel has to be taken in by the umpire crew. Watching the event unfold before snow-capped mountains made the event's namesake come to mind.
Jeremy McIntyre was a member of the Stanford Sailing team, a captain, All-American and a great friend to those who memorialize his time with the team amongst the Stanford Sailing community and beyond. It seems fitting to honor, along with Jeremy, two other Stanford Sailors who have fallen victim to avalanches while skiing, Drew Gashler and, just last weekend, Liz Clabaugh '95. I have a feeling they would have been proud of the spirit shown by all sailing today.
Many thanks to our umpire crew, led by CHUMP Rob Overton, Bryan MacDonald, Melody Schumacher and Justin Lim. It's not easy being an umpire, while teams are rotating and taking breaks, they are throttle down to the next race, each covering 30 today. But it's not really team racing without an umpire keeping the racing fair.
Sunday at Stanford was about as easy as a day of RC could be. The only day in recent memory better was yesterday. Due to yesterday's excellence, only 30 races were needed to complete the format. We did so before 1:30p.
A 5-9 knot easterly was the prevailing condition and sailor adapted well to the decrease from the day prior. Many thanks again to our umpire crew for handling the event. While the 90 total races were shared evenly by the 60 sailors present, the umpire crew of 4 handled the other side of the operation, with seldom a break.
