Halifax River Invitational

Summary

Saturday, February 28:

Racing took place in a northerly breeze that began the day at approximately 10-12 knots and steadily increased throughout the regatta, reaching gusts around 17 knots and 15 knots sustained by the final sets. The wind featured periodic gusts and oscillations of roughly 5-10 degrees. A consistent chop of approximately one foot developed across the course area, and a strong current was present throughout the day, influencing starting line positioning and mark roundings.

Racing in both fleets was competitive, with particularly tight finishes among the top half of the standings. Several races concluded with multiple boats overlapped at the finish line. Most races were sailed as W4 courses. During the final rotations, the race committee shifted to W3s and one W5 in order to fit within the available time window.

As wind and sea state increased later in the day, boat handling became more demanding. During the final two sets, a small number of teams retired from races due to the conditions. Overall, the fleet completed a full schedule of races under building breeze, chop, and current.

Congratulations to the JU Fins (Team 1) who will have their team added to the trophy, taking home first place with nine 1st place finishes, six 2nd place and a single 3rd place finish across the two divisions.

Thanks to the Halifax Sailing Association for hosting another SAISA event, and thanks to all the volunteers that helped make this event happen.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
