Stony Brook Cup (Brendan Brown-McCue Memorial )

Summary

Saturday, March 29:

Everyone got an early glimpse of summer today as we welcomed teams to Port Jefferson for the Stony Brook Cup. Temperatures in the mid 70’s, sunshine , and a sometimes gusty but warm West breeze made for an awesome day of racing. However, everything comes at a price. Around 3pm, as A division was sent back out for their final set, the predicted back-door cold front arrived early, dropping temperatures almost 30 degrees and bringing with it a gusty Easterly. We decided to bring everyone in to the beach and assess the situation after the front passed. The change in wind direction along with the gusty conditions made running additional races safely questionable and, as the saying goes, the decision was made to not let better be the enemy of good. Racing was called and everyone enjoyed sandwiches up at the clubhouse after 12 great races.

We sail this regatta every year in memory of Brendan Brown-McCue, who tragically passed away in 2019. Brendan was a devoted member of the SBU Sailing Team, a great sailor, and a great friend.

Congratulations to the SBU Seawolves for the win in a very tight battle with Columbia. Thank you to all the visiting teams for coming to Port Jefferson and racing with us. We greatly appreciate your support of our events! Thank you to our alumni James Gilmore III ‘19, Gerrit Bittmann’ 24, Lauren Maloney’ 12, Jon Gorman ‘20, and Danyte Reisinger ‘19 for their help today! Also, many thanks to all the SBU team members for their assistance throughout the day.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
