The day started in typical Morro Bay fashion with zero wind and 4 knots of flood. A short postponement was announced but at 11:45 the breeze had built to a shifty 4-6 knots and racing was commenced. The forecast was for 0-2 knots so even this light breeze exceeded expectations. Racing was tricky in these light winds and heavy current but teams got to see what sailing in Morro Bay is all about- making gains in the puffs while trying to hold position against the current in the lulls. At around 3:30 the wind began to die as race 12 was being completed. Racing was called off at 3:50 with 12 races having been completed.
One request for redress due to sailing conditions in race 12 was filed with a hearing following race committee's arrival at the dock. Ultimately the protest committee found the request for redress invalid.
Thank you to our volunteer umpires Kai Ponting, Chloe Schofield, Max Case, and Alyssa Shadduck for their time and effort on the water.
Day 2 began with a more optimistic start of clear skies and more consistent breeze. Racing began at 11:30 with 5-6 knots from the northwest and a flood tide. Teams were soon treated to slack tide with the breeze still holding light and consistent. Around 1:30 a dense fog that had been hovering around Morro Rock found its way to the racing area and the breeze dropped. The current now running against the wind made downwind legs challenging. As the 3:00 deadline for last warning approached, it was clear that we were not going to be able to complete our last race in time. Cal and Arizona State graciously agreed to stay after the deadline and the 28th race was commenced drawing to a close Mustang Team Race 2025.
Thank you to Brooks and Michael Measures, Charlie Poggemann, Kai Ponting, Chloe Schofield, Alyssa Shadduck, Max Case and the Morro Bay Yacht Club for making this regatta possible.
