The 2025 KP Open Team Race started off with a relatively light southerly and temps just warm enough to enable some of the braver competitors to ditch their drysuits. Breeze throughout the day gradually clocked right and escalated significantly, but there was still plenty of shifting back & forth + up & down that kept RC active. On that note, many thanks to PRO Rick Dominique + mark boat drivers Rob Finora & Elliott Chamberland for keeping the course square throughout the day. Thanks as well to Chief Umpire Doc Sullivan and his crew for keeping things fair on all sides of the course today.
Racing was tight throughout the day, particularly once the breeze picked up towards the end. The scores at the end of day one reflect this, with Penn, Bowdoin, Roger Williams, and Charleston all tied for 2nd with 6 wins and 3 losses each. Hobart and Coast Guard are not far behind with equal record of 4 and 5, although Hobart gets the edge there on the head-to-head tiebreaker. Even 0-9 KP kept things tight on the course, as evidenced by a 1,2,3 combo going around mark 2 in their last race that ended up falling apart following a capsize. Props to St. Mary's, who leads the pack with 8 wins against only 1 loss so far.
A full round robin of 45 races was completed today. Plan for tomorrow is to go Top 6 and Bottom 4 followed by a Final Four.
Day 2 started off with a strong northwesterly and freezing temperatures that would thankfully rise throughout the day. With the warmer weather came a drop in wind and an increase in current - by the time we got to the Final Four we had committee boats + marks swinging around and competitors challenged with significant changes from one leg of the course to the next.
St. Mary's went undefeated on the day and capped off the regatta as clear cut winners. Bowdoin, Roger Williams, and Penn rounded out the top 4 with the latter two having battled it out in their last race of the day to decide who would finish on the podium.
Thank you to KP Offshore Head Coach Avi Lessman, who stepped in today to PRO and crushed it, with all 27 remaining races completed just in time despite some significant shutdowns in the breeze.
Thank you to the entire umpire staff that gave us so much of their time this weekend to keep the game fun and fair: ChUmp Doc Sullivan, Ben Quincy, Brian Reilly, John Brendel, Meg Leary, Sam Hahn, Teresa Laughlin, Bailey Carter, and Cormac Murphy.
We look forward to having some of these teams and many more back at KP for Admiral's Cup next month!
