The UCSD Sailing team hosted their annual Jeff Simon Memorial Regatta at Mission Bay Yacht Club in honor of former team member, Jeff Simon, who passed away from cancer in 2007 shortly after graduating. 13 schools with a total of 40 boats traveled to San Diego to participate in the event. The regatta started at about 11:30 with strong winds of about 12 kts and gusts up to 20 kts. After the first set of A races, RC called for a postponement due to a large number of capsizes. The breeze died throughout the afternoon, setting at around 5-10 kts. At the end of the first day each division had competed in 4 races.
Day 2 of The Jeff Simon Memorial Regatta displayed a lot less wind than Day 1. No wind and a little rain started the day, preventing RC from running races in the morning. At around 12pm the breeze started to build and racing was able restart. The breeze continued to build throughout the day to roughly 6 kts. Light and shifty conditions resulted in a huge separation of boats within the fleet. Despite the challenging conditions, RC was able to run two more races in each division. Overall, a wonderful weekend of sailing and thank you to all the teams who came to compete.
