The day began with an on-shore postponement, but the wait paid off: the renowned Rhode Island sea breeze picked up around noon, treating sailors to an afternoon of 15-20 knots.
Yale currently leads with a 9/2 record, followed closely by Harvard and Roger Williams, both with a record of 8/2. The top three in the rankings going in to this week, it’s no surprise to see them on top - but with two days of racing to go, there’s still time for the standings to shake up! Dartmouth and Brown are in also in the hunt, with a 8/3 and 7/4 record respectively.
From the first gun it was a fast and frantic day, with race committee running 84 races in a little over 5 hours.
After a long day of racing at the Ted Turner '60 Sailing Pavilion and the Edgewood Yacht Club, the stage is set to crown a national champion tomorrow. Throughout a long day on the water, maneuvers were made and protests were called, shuffling the scoreboard. Harvard, back for blood after finishing second last year, have moved up to first, bumping Yale down to second. Last year’s winners, Roger Williams University, sit in third. Scores are close and there’s no clear runaway winner - with tomorrow’s unpredictable weather forecast, any of these three teams could take the championship.
Down the leaderboard, sailors battled in big, shifty breeze to see who would live to see the final day. These sailors truly are the best of the best - in fact, scores were so close in the round of 16 that there was a three way tie for 7th, leading to a sail off to see who would be the last two teams at the top. Tulane and Boston College triumphed over Navy to move on to the final day of racing.
The race committee began the round of 8 Friday evening, with hopes to continue at 10am tomorrow morning. After the Round of 8, the top four teams will move on to a Final Four, eventually crowning a national champion.
