Drexel Open

Summary

Saturday, May 3:

An uncertain forecast greeted sailors at the Drexel Open, calling for possible sever weather in the afternoon and building breezes beforehand that may threaten racing. The early morning wind was light and unsettled adding to the unease about getting races in.

Fortunately, the weather gods were kind and once the wind filled in from the SSW it only slowly rotated to the Southwest. A brief postponement was needed to square the course to the new winds, but that was it for the day waiting wise. The wind initially did build rapidly but thankfully topped out at 13 gusting to 16 kts around noon, before dropping back to 5 kts briefly in the afternoon, finally returning to the teens to end the day. The gusts and some inadvertent jibes lead to about half a dozen capsizes. The full rotation was completed in one day thanks to these conditions.

An unreported serious collision in Race A1 (we believe) lead to damage on one of our boats. The RC did not witness the collision and neither team filed a protest nor reported any injury. A breakdown was awarded to Monmouth's B division who then sailed this boat before it was realized it had been holed. Following the conclusion of the regatta, Princeton requested a breakdown for the incident, stating they had been hit by a give-way boat, with no notification to the RC, hearing request filed, or a preceding protest with facts found available this request was denied.

Congratulations to the Drexel Team including seniors Ian and Dren on winning our home event, and to Stevens and Rutgers, rounding out the top three for the event. Thank you to the Drexel Sailors who helped run the event and to the club and staff at Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia who helped keep us sailing after having a damaged boat early in the event.

Score history

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
