The Salt Pond delivered some shifty and, at times, exciting conditions for the first half of the Southern 5 Regatta. After a brief competitor's meeting, sailors sailed south to the racing area and were greeted with an oscillating northerly breeze. Velocity remained mostly steady at about 10-13 kts. Camels 1 proved dominant in the first four races, sailing smart and fast to take an early overall lead. Not far behind were the Seahawks and Camels 2. Sailors then made their way back to the dock for some much needed lunch.
A second round of racing commenced at 1530, though some isolated showers deceivingly dampened our breeze. Race 5 went to the Rhody Rams after a great start and commanding lead throughout. At the second beat of race 6, a squall moved over the racing area and brought along an unexpected 18-20 kt breeze line. This caused many capsizes and a few subsequent retirements. Given the low air and water temperatures, RC elected to call it a day as more unsettled weather approached.
Well done to all competitors, and a special thanks to the URI sailors on RC support for helping with the many course changes we dealt with. We'll be back tomorrow for another go.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.
The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
