The night before the regatta we were looking forward to a grey, but pleasant day of sailing, but forecast updates the morning turned it into a rather damp day of racing with drizzle starting around the first warning for the day just after 10am. The winds however were largely cooperative and remained fairly steady in direction out of the east even if the velocity came and went along with the rain. As winds picked up in the first B rotation we stretched the course, only to shorten it a rotation later as the teeth of the ebbing tidal Delaware made for a upwind sailing treadmill for some of the less experienced skippers. There was enough breeze to sail, but you had to be very efficient at times to make tracks upwind and current.
With only 6 teams we elected at the skippers meeting to go for getting the full rotation done in one day to avoid an even soggier sail on Sunday, and we managed to squeeze in a bonus 7th race for each division with some extra time on the clock for the day.
Delaware's team ran the board especially in B division so congratulations to them on winning the 2024 Drexel Open.
Thanks to Corinthian Yacht Club for being accommodating with a busy weekend on their hands. Use of their committee boat and being able to get our course close to the docks made it much easier to get racing in. Thanks also to all the Drexel Sailors who helped run the event in spite of the damp conditions, the enthusiasm showed through.
