The inaugural Turner Team Race was a great success! We had excellent conditions all day off Downtown Charleston's East Battery sailing out of Carolina Yacht Club. The first flight started in a 12-18 knot northerly with shifts up to 40 degrees at times. The breeze eventually shifted more NW/W later in the day and settled in around 7-12 knots with some lulls as low as 2 knots and some puffs still coming through in the high teens throughout the day. Current wasn't much of a factor in the morning, but the ebb tide did cause some course right to left sweep and made the final beats in the Cooper River very interesting at times.
Congratulations to Jacksonville University on a well deserved first place finish overall and to North Carolina State & Eckerd College rounding out the podium in 2nd & 3rd place overall.
This event acted as the secondary qualifier for the 2023 SAISA Open Team Race Championship next month (with the top 4 teams qualifying), so congratulations to Jacksonville University, North Carolina State, Eckerd College & The Citadel for qualifying for the final 4 spots of the 2023 SAISA Open Team Race Championship.
A huge thank you to all the volunteers that made this event possible! Ryan Hamm did an incredible job as PRO with the dynamic breeze we had coming over the Charleston City Front and Citadel cadet Will Altizer also was a great help on the start boat alongside Coach Hamm. Ryan Hamm actually did such a great job running races, that we were able to get two full round robins in on the first day & finish the entire event in one day (instead of the original two days planned). Thank you to all of our umpires: Ed Norton, Ainsley Parramore, Brigette Croke & Andrew Bercovici that made the sailing fair all day. Thank you to Greg Walters and his daughter Liz Walters for running the finish boat/doing scores all day along with providing us their personal boats as the finish boat and one umpire boat. Thank you to Teddy Turner for also providing his center console as one of the umpire boats. Finally, a massive thank you to Carolina Yacht Club (especially Jason Rucker) for letting us use their facilities and boats. Also, thank you to Charleston Community Sailing for also providing us with 6x 420s and sails for all of the 420s along with 2x umpire boats.
