This regatta honors a former Tufts faculty adviser and used to be sailed in Larks on Upper Mystic Lake in Medford, MA. Previously a fleet racing regatta, the format was changed to team racing 1996. It is believed to be the 63rd running of the Jan Friis Trophy. RWU has been hosting it since 2018.
An easterly! We seldom get easterlies. It was shifty. The current was ebbing hard for most of the day. 51 races were sailed. Two requests for redress were heard resulting in two re-sails to take place on Sunday.
Many thanks to the umpire team who endured wind and rain and hail to keep the racing fair: ChUmp John Mooney, Pearson Potts, Scott Booth, Jimmy Kennedy, Bob Austin LaFrance, Amy Ferreira, Moose McClintock, Mike Campbell, and Nick Cromwell.
PRO Abby Cook cranked out races. Peter Cotoia '26 and Oliver Stokke '26 were (frozen) warriors in the finish boat.
There was a lot of hype about the forecast that never materialized.
Abby Cook '15, Ruby Hope '25, and Caylin Schnoor '25 kept races rolling in a classically shifty westerly that ranged from 7-12 knots with some higher gusts. There was flooding cross current for most of the day. Two round robins and a single final four was sailed over the 2 days.
Elyssa Franklin '26 and Katie McGagh '26 called the finish line. Chase Reynolds '24 was the on land manager. John Pratt was substituted in for Moose McClintock on the umpire team. Thanks to John Mooney, Sail Newport, and Brown for lending us powerboats.
