As so often is the case in sailing, this weekend was a perfect example of "if the regatta had only been a day earlier". After an entire week of summer temperatures and beautiful breeze, light and variable winds made for very challenging conditions the entire weekend. Saturday started out sunny and warm and an unpredicted south westerly breeze that allowed us to start the first race a little after 10am. Unfortunately, that breeze did not last and the race was abandoned half way through. What followed was a day of stops and starts as we followed the wind around the dial, with it eventually settling in to a southeasterly direction by the end of the day. Rain showers came and went. It was slow going overall and we were able to complete six races in each division by 4:45pm. After a long day on the water, racing finished for the day. One request for redress was disallowed and one protest was filed where it was determined no foul was committed. Thank you to Dreugh Phillips from CNU for staying to help hear them.
Sailors arrived to a glassed over Port Jefferson Harbor, overcast skies, and occasional banks of fog. After about an hour postponement on land, a light NNE breeze began to materialize and A division mobilized. One A race was completed just as the breeze died again. A was sent back in until the predicted easterly began to fill. Another A race was completed a bit before 1pm. As divisions were rotating, the breeze softened again. B division slowly made their way to the course and the decision was made to go for a final 2 B races once the breeze filled in again. It did around 1:30pm and the final races were completed in a 5-8 knt easterly. As the fleet sailed in, the sun appeared. Overall, 8 races in each division were completed for the regatta. Congratulations to Princeton for winning the 2023 Grant Trophy and congratulations to the top 6 teams for qualifying for the America Trophy!
Huge thank you to the Stony Brook School for allowing us to use their 420 fleet and powerboats for the event and to the Port Jefferson Yacht Club for being our host venue. Big thank you to Wally Henry, Max Hafen, Ella Simmons, Kristin Hess'22, James Gilmore'19, Gerrit Bittmann'24, and Ryan Magill'22 for helping on mark/support boats and to Adam Zeng'24, Amanda Liu'23, Rose von Eckartsberg'25, and Hannah Forcone'25 for running the races all weekend.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.
The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
