Volunteer Open

Sailors arrived to sunny skies and winds from the ENE at 10 knts with a forecast to shift to the SW at 10 knts in the afternoon. First race sequence was started at 10:15 am with 9 teams present. Race 1A was begun in as 5.8 knt breeze from the ENE with measured oscillations of 15 to 18 degrees with the better puffs coming from the left out of the NE indicated a fighting and shifting breeze as was predicted. The wind was dying during the first race and the first boat completed the first race in 14 min with a breeze of 2.3 knts recorded at the finish. The ninth boat completed the course in a drifter of 0.6 knts. The wind shut off and an AP was hoisted resulting a nearly 2 hour delay for lack of any breeze over 0.6 knts. About 12:45pm the breeze began building back from the SSW enough to get the second race off in 2.1 knts of breeze with puffs to 3.5 knts from the SE. The teams that recognized the new puffs on the left side made out well in Race 2A. Within a minute of the last boat finishing race 2A, the predicted breeze blew in from the WSW and the course was reset. All remaining races were raced in a WSW wind sustained at 8.6 to 11.4 knts with puffs recording on the RC boat at 12 knts to 15.4 knts. The shifts were predictable and consistently timed with 10 to 19 degree oscillations and an average of 3.5 min to 4.5 min between wind direction/strength oscillations. The majority of the stronger shifts came from the left while the lulls were consistently from the right side of the course. The teams that recognized the shifts and tacked on each shift were rewarded in their tactics resulting in numerous lead changes on every leg in most every race. Also, thanks to winds reaching to the lower limits of planing conditions, those able to take advantage made huge gains downwind. The fleet was closely matched, which resulted in numerous bunches at the leeward mark and therefore causing those with sound tactics at the marking rounds to be able to gain several positions.
