Sailors arrived to a brisk NW wind gusting over 30 and snow squalls. We were hoping that the lagoon would be sheltered enough to get some sailing in but by 1PM it was clear that the situation wouldn't improve enough so we called the regatta for the day.
Sailors arrived at 9AM to 20 degree temps, a few inches of snow and ice in boats and a blowout tide that took all the water from the Lagoon. We postponed until the weather warmed up and then decided to try to run some races in the deepest part of the lagoon as opposed to going out in the river where sailors would be on the water constantly for 3 hours. The first race got underway right at noon in a very small and narrow N course. The first race was a little over 5 minutes long and races never got much longer even as the water rose. The course was also very shifty and short courses with huge wind shifts made for multiple lead changes in close races. In the end 3 teams tied for first resulting in a tie break that saw BC come out victorious. For purposes of the MAISA Team Race League we had a sailoff between KP and SUNY which SUNY won. So in the MAISA League the points are HWS 5, GTN 4, ODU 3, SUNY, 2, KP 1.
Many thanks to the Georgetown undergrads for braving the cold temps to run races. And a huge thank you to our umpire team: Chief Umpire Billy Martin, Sean Segerblom, Caroline Teare, Lucy Beimfohr and Will Logue.
