Gorge Invite

Summary

Saturday, May 7:

The Columbia River Gorge delivered the goods this weekend like a mad scientist: unstable, erratic, and spectacular.

Winds on Saturday came out swinging with gusty westerlies in the low 20s, gusts in the high 20s. They quickly tapered to the mid teens after the first two races, with lulls down to 10 kts but gusts back to 20, all while oscillating +/- 15% from westerly, occasionally more - once veering north to build in a squall only to back south and die in its passing. Said squalls and blue skies took turns drenching contestants in rain, sunshine, and rainbows, with some hail thrown in for good measure. 5 races completed in A, 3 in B - including the first and hopefully last windward-leeward race with two back to back downwind legs at Gorge Invite.

Sunday, May 8:

Sunday began with a weak easterly, dying before the first race could begin - leading to the creation of a 20 boat FJ conga line. The festivities continued on shore with a resounding Electric Slide that could be heard in Stevenson. A westerly soon filled in at 7 to 10 kts. This built slowly through the early afternoon to 12-15 kts with more left shifts to the south, compared to Saturdays right favoring winds. For the final two races of the day the Gorge pulled out the stops, blasting 25 kts down the course and flipping a third of the fleet.

2 races completed in A, 4 in B.

Bailers were lost in the making of this regatta.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
