The 2022 Aaron Szambecki Team Race got off to a great start with WNW winds 15-25kts, with a few gusts into the 30's. Sailors were challenged with chop and waves created by the ebb tide going against the wind.
After a few larger gusts (40kts) rolled through the course, the fleet returned to shore to monitor the conditions. At 3pm a decision was made to end racing for the day. 20 races were completed. Tomorrow's forecast promises some great breeze and we look forward to completing the round robin.
A big thanks goes out to the ODU Monarchs who served as race committee and a special shout out to the members of Towne Point Yacht Club for providing lunch to the sailors, umpires, and spectators.
Round robin 1 was completed in 8-20kts from the West. At 12pm, a Top 6/Bottom 4 round was started and all but 3 races were completed prior to the 3pm cutoff.
Thank you to Chief Umpire Christine Accettella and her great team of Steve Sparkman, Jeff Borland, Alex Jacobs, Carter Little, Sam Ficksman, Jeremy Herrin, Anna Patterson, and Michael Collins for umpiring. Norfolk Yacht and Country Club provided use of their powerboats which were used as umpire boats. Thank you to Dillon Paiva from Navy for serving as ICSA rep.
Congratulations to Boston College, winning the 2022 Aaron Szambecki Team Race with an 12-1 record.
