Almost exactly 1 year from the day everything shut down due to Covid, the College of Charleston came back online and hosted our first event with Covid restrictions in place. Like a canary in a coal mine we had some bumps in the road but the event was a success. We were able to complete 7 great races in a building sea breeze. We combined 9 A and B division teams in one fleet of 18 which made for some excellent college racing. The breeze aggressively backed as it settled in causing the pin to be favored on most starts. There were some pretty epic pileups at the pin as racers got their feet back under them. For the most part 720's followed fouls and when boats capsized they were recovered in a timely fashion. As we got later in the afternoon the breeze built to 15-25 knots and carnage increased. With seven races in the bank the bank we decided to call it. NC State's A-Division had a breakdown that required returning to the sailing center for repairs and unfortunately missed 4 races. CofC Coed's A Division also missed a race after a failed jib luff wire. Average points were given in both cases. One protest was filed on the water but not pursued on shore. Thanks to the other coaches and team leaders for helping manage RC and breakdown duties, especially Jon Faudree (breakdowns) of JU and Cole Woerner of Georgia Tech (Mark set). I'd also like to thank the Saisa Medical Officer, Chad Parker and commend all competitors and coaches for getting their pre event Covid testing and reporting completed. During ours we discovered some cases unfortunately. Our thoughts are with those that are dealing with Covid currently and hope to a continued decline in coming weeks and months.
