Late last week we learned the news that Newport sailing hero and champion Dr. Robin Wallace had passed away. A huge loss to the entire sailing community. We wanted to name these regattas in his honor. Please see this tribute video which was created for the Sail Newport gala in September 20, 2014: https://vimeo.com/104465371 You can also read more about Dr. Wallace in Scuttlebutt's article:https://www.sailingscuttlebutt.com/2021/03/21/eight-bells-robin-wallace/
Glorious spring conditions today: warm, sunny. We had loads of outgoing current and the wind was a bit fluky in the morning while we sailed 2.1 flights before breeze did a 180 and shut off. After a lunch break on land, we were able to finish the remaining rounds in a fresh ESE breeze. No protests were filed. One breakdown occurred, the affected team was still able to get the W with a 2 v 3.
Originally, we had plans to team race with CGA and URI, but due to Covid-related issues CGA had to bow out. Instead, URI packed up three teams to battle with three from RWU. After one round-robin we switched gears to fleet racing. See the results at the Robin Wallace Fleet Race.
Thanks to Cal Robbins and Grant Gridley in the finish boat. Colin Merrick and Spencer Cartwright on the mark set boat, and Rachel Holick and Annika Irene alternating on the start boat. Also thanks to URI for bringing their own coach boat.
