Southern Collegiate Offshore Regatta (SCOR) A Div

Summary

Saturday, February 16:

CofC score in Race 3 is a 2, as they accepted a 20% penalty.

A beautiful SSW breeze ranging from 8-16 knots greeted 13 teams sailing in two divisions at this years Southern Collegiate Offshore Regatta. Many teams had arrived a day early to practice while others arrived day of and adjusted to their rides prior to the 11AM start time. We had to adjust the course and were delayed to noon in the process but were able to get off 5 Races in A division and 3 in B Division. CofC and Navy exchanged blows in A division with CofC taking an early lead by the end of the day. In B Division the URI Rams put up a picket fence on J105 Shimmer. Florida State was nipping at their heels taking 3 seconds about another J105 Ruckus and Clemson stayed close on Fog Dog an ID 35. All teams showed marked improvement throughout the day of racing. Conditions were classic for Charleston Harbor, plenty of current to play with a few shifts each leg leaving opportunities to pass throughout. The final race of the day was a distance race back to the Carolina YC. A fleet's race had to be finished early at the final mark and B division was cut off by a departing cruise ship, guarded by the Coast Guard. Carolina YC hosted us throughout the weekend and provided a nice dinner on Saturday night that was devoured by the sailors after the long day.

Sunday, February 17:

Breeze was lighter on Sunday out of the NE at 5-6 knots. The outgoing tide was into the wind making for efficient upwinds and challenging downwinds. Staying in the pressure was key to success as well as keeping kites full and pulling on the downwinds. After shortening the first race of the day there was a lull in the breeze but after the tide turned the breeze filled enough for another light air battle. The URI Ram's run in the B Fleet was thwarted by the Clemson Tigers who were able to take the final two races. The Rams took second in these, keeping an excellent series intact. The Naval Academy sailed 2 beautiful races showing speed both up and downwind to take first in both. Eckerd sailed kept their boat rolling and took second in both. The finale was set up as another distance race but as the fleets approached the finish the breeze slowly but surely shut off. After all but one boat lost pressure in their kites and started being pulled past their layline to the finish the RC was forced to call it. Congratulations go to the Naval Academy for winning the Sport Boat Fleet/A Fleet and the URI Rams for winning the displacement/B Fleet. This year we calculated an overall winner which was awarded to URI for their series of 1,1,1,2,2 . The Rams were awarded a new perpetual trophy and boat co-owner Myles Martschink earned the first CofC maroon sportcoat (ala the Masters) which we expect to see him in on a regular basis at parties and on the water in coming years. Big thanks to PRO Dan Machowski, host Carolina Yacht Club, local boat owner and the SCOR committee that works for months organizing and preparing for this fun event.
