Overnight rain cleared and the day started on time on the water at 1000 with about 7 knots of breeze out of the East. Unfortunately after one tide induced general recall as Race 1A was getting off again and the wind faded to 4 kts and fell to about 0 in the face of a fierce flooding tide. Racing was postponed ashore for about a half hour.
Racing resumed a little after 1130 with light winds a feature of the remainder of the races. The teams conducted themselves well battling the tidal river and a further 3 rotations went off until race 5B when the winds once again diminished forcing us to head a shore and finally suspend racing for the day at 1530.
The Drexel Open challenged sailors with just about every conditions, except sun! Sunday dawned with light rain falling, winds were initially moderate 8 knots out the East. There was a three way tie for third so the sailors had a bit to settle on day 2. By the time B Division cleared the docks around 1000 to start race 5B again it quickly built to 15 kts leading to a couple capsizes. Boat 1, Delaware lost their rig after a pin came loose, no damage or injuries, the boat was returned to action by the following race.
The excitement faded as the wind made a 45 degree shift to the Northeast and began a gradual fade as A division sailed their final roatation with a increase in the rain! By the time B division made it out winds were back to about 5 knots and races were completed on a shorter course.
All races were W4 or W3s to expedite rotations .
Congratulations to Virginia Tech which took home top honors for the regatta.
