Champagne conditions for team racing on the Charles River today. An east wind at 5-8 gave way to a smoking southerly at 12-18 during the afternoon. The color coordinated Fireflies and FJs made for spectacular spectating for the abundant crowd at the pavilion and along the Cambridge seawall.
Our umpire team did a fantastic job of handling most of the justice on the water throughout the day. They were led by Mike Gemperline as CHUMP along with John Tagliamonte, John Pratt, Rex Cameron, David Larson, Mike Levesque, Ryan Mullins, and Nick Sertl. MIT support staff was lead by Wally Corwin on dock duty, Coach Matt Lindblad, Hugh Dougherty, Charles Lindsay, Isabelle Yen, Maile Jim, and Lucinda Charles barking occasionally at the unlucky dogs not in a boat today.
The team race honors a distinguished member of the MIT Class of 1985 who sailed A Division for 3 of her 4 years on the sailing team. Today completed 20 flights for 120 races and tomorrow will be top 8 in FJs and bottom 8 in Fireflies.

A couple of re-sailed races were taken care of early in the day with the schools then breaking into a top 8 in FJs and a bottom 8 in Fireflies. The wind speed started around 15-18 knots then built to 20-30 with gusts to 47. The Turbo FJs changed over to storm jibs and the Fireflies went with a reefed mainsail to minimize swimming.
Harvard prevailed after 176 races were completed with a record of 16 wins and only 6 losses. Boston College took second place and third went to Dartmouth as both teams had records of 15 and 7. Sailors were properly fatigued after a fun weekend on the Charles River. Special thanks again to our amazing umpire team who stayed up with rolling 2 minutes sequences for most of the weekend.
