With the nor'easter finally winding down, competitors showed up to the first weekend of NEISA competition and cold and windy conditions to start the day. As the day went on the breeze continued to die down - starting with brisk gusts around 16 knots for the early races out of the North and ending up around 6 knots in the lulls out of the Northeast by the end of racing. A full round robin of 28 races in FJs was sailed for the 8 teams between 10:30 and 2pm. A final four round was sailed from 2:15 to just after 3pm. In the end, there was a tie for first place between Brown and MIT, both sitting at 8-2. A sail off was started around 3:15pm between the two teams for the overall win with MIT prevailing over Brown and winning the 2018 Sharpe Team Race Trophy.
A huge thanks to Brown sailors Jack Briano '21, Justin Chiang '21, Ary Dutta '21, and Elizabeth Rolfes '21 for braving the cold and helping on the water and to Coach Jeff Bresnahan and Connecticut College for bringing an extra safety boat. Special thanks as well to Harvard Coach Bern Noack for being on the water in the safety boat and helping out, and to Dartmouth Coach David Thompson, Coast Guard Coach Brian Swingly, Brown Coach Quentin Chafee, and MIT Coach Matt Lindblad for hearing a few protests. All in all it was a great day of sailing to start the New England season!
