Southern Collegiate Offshore Regatta (SCOR)

Summary

Saturday, February 17:

The teams met at Carolina YC to a breezy easterly with max puffs of 25mph. Though there was initial concern about sailing, or at least using spinnakers, the breeze quickly moderated to a nice 12-15. Racing started at 11:15 and 5 races were completed before the breeze totally faded at 4pm.

The teams sailed with 8 members on Melges 32s, ID 35s, J105s and J 120s and time on time scoring was used. The first race finishes represent the results from the day and 5 races were scored. Attached are the individual race scores. Great appreciation goes to the nine boat owners for loaning their boats and sailing as safety officers. Thanks to Carolina YC for hosting and providing breakfast and dinner for all the competitors and to PRO Dan Machowski and his team for running great racing. Finally, Tripp Fellabom of North Sails did a superb job of organizing the event!

Racing starts at 10 am on Sunday and no races will start after 2pm. 2 races are planned.

Sunday, February 18:

This morning’s first race started in a very light , almost unsailable northerly. With the current starting a strong ebb and the sea breeze filling on the second leg and shifting 150 degrees, the challenging race was shortened at the bottom mark. After a short wait while the breeze built to near 18 mph from the east, the temperatures dropped and the clouds moved in, Pro Dan Machowski started the distance race that took the fleet in a tour of the harbor in a wide triangle- and this race counted double ( thus scores doubled on the attached final score sheet for the last race) . Though the first weather leg was tight with the first three Boats rounding the top Mark almost overlapped, by the finish the fleet had spread a bit. Congrats to the Charleston Cougars for the final win, the Navy Mishipmen for second and Cal Maritime for their third place finish. Thanks again to Carolina YC for their hospitality and Tripp Fellabom for his leadership in managing a great event. And Thanks again to Dan Machowski, his RC team and the Cougar mark set team for ensuring great racing! Check out the overall race finishes on the attached race score sheet. The scores listed in tech score for race one are the overall.
