NEISA Coed Championship/US Coast Guard Alumni Bowl

Summary

Saturday, April 28:

Champagne sailing conditions on day one of the 2018 NEISA Coed Dinghy Championship for the U.S. Coast Guard Alumni Bowl. Competitor's arrived to lots of sunshine, temps near 70 degrees, and a building southerly seabreeze ranging between 10-16 knots for most of the day. This was also the first regatta hosted by Brown in the new Edgewood Yacht Club and Ted Turner Sailing Pavilion. A-division sailed FJs and B-division sailed Z420s on all W4 courses with 10 races in each division. Two protests were heard with one being found invalid and Yale B-division being disqualified in race 3B. Thanks to our great team of judges: Peter Bailey, John Moulthrop, Bob Long, and Tony Weiner. Thanks as well to Coast Guard, Yale, Dartmouth, and the Moses Brown School for bringing powerboats for coaches and judges, and to Roger Williams for bringing extra boat parts. Thank you to URI Head Coach Skip Whyte for being the NEISA Representative. Special thanks to photographer Rob Migliaccio for taking his awesome photos that will be posted on the NEISA Facebook page.

Boston College leads after day one after an impressive performance in B-division. The scores are very tight from 2nd through 12th place with 8 berths up for grabs to the 2018 ICSA/Gill Dinghy National Semifinals. First Race is scheduled for 10am on Sunday with each division switching fleets.

Sunday, April 29:

Day two of the NEISA Coed Dinghy Championship for the U.S. Coast Guard Alumni Bowl started out with very little wind, lots of current, and some occasional light rain - much different than day one. One race was attempted and abandoned in a light and unstable northerly, and then the breeze filled lightly from just about every direction. Competitor's were sent to shore for an early lunch break at around 11:00am and waited until 12:00pm when a nice South/SE breeze filled in at around 8-10 knots unexpectedly for three races in A-division and two B-division races. The last two B-division races of the regatta and the last A-division race were sailed in a new breeze that was primarily from the West and very shifty with some sunshine. A-division sailed Z420s and B-division sailed FJs on W4 and W5 courses. No protests were filed and there were no breakdowns.

It came down to the final race of the regatta, race 14B, for the last berth to the 2018 ICSA/Gill Dinghy National Semifinals between three teams: Brown, Boston University, and Bowdoin with all three teams within a point of each other.

Congratulations to the Boston College Eagles on a terrific performance, wining the 2018 U.S. Coast Guard Alumni Bowl by 18 points. Congratulations as well to Roger Williams, Dartmouth, Coast Guard, URI, Yale, MIT, and BU who are all headed to Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA for the Gill College Sailing Dinghy National Championship. Go NEISA!

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
