All 9 teams arrived at the lake around 8:30am ready to sail in some rainy and cold weather. RC and crash boats went out to set the course and the day started without a hitch. The wind was heavy around 13-15 all day gusting up to 20. After the first rotation the wind picked up and we were dealing with several turtled boats. For the rest of the day, there was at least 1 or 2 turtled boats in every set. Our safety boats did an amazing job making sure out boats and sailors stayed safe.
Because of so many capsized/turtled boats rotations were taking about one hour each. Around 4:30pm, we decided, along with RC's and judges advice, to finish the required 10 races to complete the regatta. We felt that we wouldn't be able to complete another full round robin on Sunday looking at the forecasted conditions which were icy and even more windy.
Thanks to all the sailors' determination and strength we were able to finish this regatta in one day, sailing until around 7pm. Also, thank you to all the judges that came without even having to hear a protest. Finally, thank you to our PRO and all of the Michigan volunteers who worked tirelessly in the cold to keep everyone and our boats safe. Congrats to Wisconsin, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Minnesota for qualifying for the 2018 Sperry College Sailing Women’s National Championship at Old Dominion Universit! Stay warm and hopefully Spring will come soon!
