Gaucho Team Race

Summary

Saturday, January 27:

January in Santa Barbara delivered light and shifty wind that was generally from the southwest. 8 teams from the PCCSC were coached by conference clinician and team race national champion, Jake Reynolds. After a postponement and some chalk talks by Jake, the teams headed out on the water getting close to completing one round robin in the unstable breeze. Another chalk talk by Jake Reynolds rounded out the day.

Huge thank you's to the many people who helped Santa Barbara host it's first 18 boat team race regatta... Umpires: Stephen Long and Keenan Wolfe Coaches: Jake Reynolds, Roger O'Connor, and Tyler Wolk PRO: Cameron Baxter (Current UCSB Student) The SB Youth Sailing Foundation for helping us get up to 18 boats and letting us borrow so many of their whalers The SB Yacht Club for supplying support boats and... The UCSB Sailing Team who helped make the entire thing happen.

Sunday, January 28:

Another good day of racing despite shifty and difficult conditions for the RC. Racing started on time, however due to very erratic and large wind shifts, racing was postponed on the water while the RC waited for the breeze to stabilize from the west. The decision was to go to the knock out final four and a consolation round after finishing the first round robin. Two rounds of the final four were completed and one consolation round was completed as well as the breeze came up late in the day. The UCSB Gauchos Blue Team went undefeated (go Gauchos!) for the duration of the regatta while Cal Poly had a strong final four showing claiming the second place finish for the regatta (nice work 'stangs!). Cal Maritime sailed a great first round robin but struggled a bit in the final four hanging on to third place while USC rounded out the final four.

Thank you once again to Jake Reynolds for coaching, Stephen Long and Keenan Wolf for umpiring, Roger O'Conner & Tyler Wolk for moving marks, Cameron Baxter and Grant Rickon for taking on the role of Principal Race Officer, the SB Youth Sailing Foundation and SB Yacht Club for all of their help with resources, and all of the UCSB Sailing Team for putting on a great event. Of course, thank you so much to the teams that attended for making it a very fun and productive event!
