After a week of cool rainy weather, sailors were greeted by sunny skies and breezy westerly winds running down the East River this morning.
The breeze ranged from 15-20 kts most of the day with a few races where it dropped to the single digits for short periods towards the end of the day.
As always the East River's current was on full tilt and ranged from favorable-to slack-to adverse tide that picked up and made racing look like sailing on a treadmill until the current overcame the turning mark's anchors and we had to abandon racing for the day. One race was abandoned by the umpires due to breakdown, and 2 redress hearings were heard, all resulting in resail's being granted.
Tomorrow morning we will start with race 11 ODU (Black) verses HU (Pink) before finishing the second round robin. The other 2 resails will happen at the end of round 2. Race 49 SMC(Green) verses ODU (Blue) followed by Race 40 SMC (Green)verses Georgetown (Blue)
Huge thanks to the SUNY Maritime Cadets for selflessly running the event. Also thanks to the great umpire team of Rob Overton (CHUMP), Bam Miller, Larry Sill, Bill Simon, Doc Sullivan, Brendan Larrabee, Elliott Morill, and Zach Hill.
Sunday was a beautiful day to be outside, but the breeze did not cooperate for much of the day. Only 11 races were sailed 5 of which were resails or sailoffs.
After much time waiting around and lots of wind delays the second round was able to be completed but not with enough time to run a top 6 round. 2 sailoffs between USNA V. ODU and HWS V. GWU determined the championship as well as the last qualifying spot.
Lots of credit goes to the SUNY Maritime Cadets who never stopped adjusting the course in many attempts to get races going as the shifty sea breeze tried to take hold.
Thanks again to our umpire crew lead by chief umpire Rob Overton.
Congratulations to USNA for winning the 2017 Prosser Trophy.
