Navy Spring

Summary

Saturday, April 15:

The first day of the 2017 Navy Spring Regatta started out overcast. Winds were out of the Southeast at 3-8 knots and a course was set in the Severn river off Triton Point. We sailed three 4W races per division and then came in for a lunch break. After lunch, we did 3 more and then took another quick rotation break. While the boats were coming back out, the sun came out and the wind shifted to the south with a slight increase. We reset the course and did four more races per division to end the day. Dillon Paiva, Juliet Thompson, Rick Sellars and their team of Midshipmen on the race committee did a terrific job running quality races all day. After racing, the competitors were treated to a great complimentary cookout provided by the volunteers of the NASS Social Committee. Thanks to John Vandemoer, Dan Thompson and Johnny Norfleet for hearing the one protest filed on the water.

Sunday, April 16:

We started a bit late on Sunday to accommodate those who wanted to attend Easter services, so we didn't get on the water until 10:30. It was sunny and warm, with high temperatures in the low 80s. The wind was from the Southwest at 8-15 knots and due to the direction, the course was set out in the mouth of the Severn River off Horn Point. Since we were pretty far out there, we decided to not take a lunch break and end the day early. The wind was very puffy and shifty and the Race Committee had their hands full keeping the course square. The racing was tight all day with Georgetown and Navy trading the lead back and forth. The Hoyas held the lead by one point going into the last B race, but the Midshipmen were able to win the race and secure the overall regatta victory.

Score history

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
