A challenging day on the Potomac for day 1 of the John Jackson Memorial Team Race. The regatta is named for John T. Jackson Georgetown '03. John passed away one month after he graduated in a tragic deck collapse accident in Chicago. John's sister Lisa spoke about her brother to all the sailors and coaches at the competitors meeting.
The air temp of 33 made it too cold to start sailing right away. By 11 the weather had warmed enough to go sailing but a full moon low tide and NW wind meant the Washington Sailing Marina Lagoon. Racing was postponed until 1PM with the hope of going to Hains Point and finishing a round robin. At 1230PM the wind was gusting over 30mph at Hains Point so the race committee decided to run races off of the Naval Research Laboratory. 20 races were completed in a NW wind ranging from 12-25mph. One race was called off at mark 1 as a Potomac River ferry passed through the course.
Report time Sunday is 10AM with the goal of completing the first round robin and then continuing to round robin 2 or a final four and consolation four.
Racing began at 1045am in a light and shifty NW wind. The first round robin was completed and after a short break the final four and consolation four commenced. The final four and consolation four finished around 130pm and the decision was made to stop racing since the tide was low and getting lower.
Thanks to the Georgetown undergrads for running the event and to GW for the use of their boats.
