The first day of the Friis Trophy started in a light northeasterly that eventually swung hard to the east and died, allowing only four races to be completed. After a long delay a northerly filled that ranged from 5-12 knots during which another 47 races were completed. Tomorrow we will attempt to finish the second round robin and a top six/bottom four.
A light Northeasterly filled the Thames river as competitors arrived Sunday morning. Racing started at 10. The round 1 round robin was finished and a new round robin was started. Mid-way through round robin 2 the wind faded and died. While sailing was tried over the lunch hour, no new racing was sailed in the second round robin after the delay. The breeze filled again from the E, ESE around 1:15 and sailing resumed. Using the head to head scores of the round sailed earlier, a top 6 bottom 4 was completed.
Yale University won with a 14-0 record.
Thank you to all Coast Guard Cadets who volunteered their time to help run the regatta. An extra-special thanks to Kevin Dooley for serving as PRO. Thank you as well to all the umpires who helped to keep racing fair.
