Saturday of the 2017 Graham Hall Team Race started off slow with light fluky winds out of the south but finished with a steady easterly. Umpires, Race Committee and Sailors pushed hard all day long to be able to complete 78 races by 6:00 pm. Everyone is tired but excited to get back on the water tomorrow morning.
Teams awoke to a frightening sight on Sunday morning. Snow was lightly falling as sailors ate breakfast and drove to the Naval Academy. Luckily, the skies cleared up and the weather cooperated with a steady 9-12 knots out of the North all day long. PRO Gavin O'Hare with race committee team of RD Burley, Juliet Thompson, and midshipmen Jimmy Madigan, Jessica McJones, and Molly Hanson were able to complete the full round robin of sixteen teams along with an additional round for the top six teams for a total of 135 round robin races. A huge thanks to Chief Umpire Rob Overton and his excellent team of umpires: Pat Healy, Jeff Borland, Doc Sullivan, Dave Clinnin, Brady Stagg, Sam Stokes, Jim Urban, Margaret Podlich, Mark Bennet, Gina Henderson, and Mike O'Bryan. They kept the racing fair and pushed hard all regatta long to keep the sailors honest and and on their toes.
The top six round ended with a three way tie for 1st, so a sail off was necessary to determine all three podium spots. In a well fought sail off, Yale won both their races over Georgetown and Boston College to end up on top. Congratulations to Yale and we look forward to seeing everyone next year!
