Jeremy A. Pinkerton Memorial

Summary

Saturday, May 7:

Sailors arrived at the Annapolis Sailing School at 0900 for the University of Maryland Jeremy Pinkteron Memorial Regatta. Teams were greeted with a light but seemingly race worthy northerly breeze. Following a skippers meeting at 0930, A division was sent out. The first race was attempted around 1015 but was not completed as the wind shut off after the first leg. In a short water postponement the race committee searched the Chesapeake Bay and Severn River for wind and concluded that the gradient and sea breezes were fighting and it would be best to wait for one to win out on shore. During shore postponement the race committee and mark boat adjusted the course several times trying to keep up with the oscillations in breeze. At around noon A division was sent out and completed two races in light and shifty conditions with chop from power boat traffic on the Severn. During rotations the wind completely died again, and just after B division made it to the race course they were sent back in, this time for the day as several other regattas were also cancelling and forecasts did not look positive. All races were modified windward leewards.

Sunday, May 8:

Sailors arrived at 0930 for the second day of the Jeremy Pinkerton Memorial regatta. Teams were met this time with a much nicer 12 to 15 knots of breeze out of the north west. Forecasts were expected to build and the hosts were optimistic that a regatta could be completed. B division was on the water at 1000 and two races were completed quickly. There were two capsizes in the breezy conditions with gusts into the lower 20s. Due to the long distance from the rotation dock, in the interest of completing as many races as possible and preventing any damage that could be caused by rotating in windy conditions, it was decided that divisions would now go out to complete four races starting with A division. The breeze in the Severn was recorded as 15 knots building to 20 knots - with gusts to nearly 30 knots - as racing continued. There was not single A division race completed without a capsize. The course was set in the most sheltered area possible, but doing so came with huge velocity shifts over and around horn point. During the fourth race of the second A division set, three boats capsized at least once, one of which needed assistance with righting. One boat chose to leave the race course before finishing as a result. Another drifted further into the Severn where the waves and exposure to breeze was considerably higher. During the chaos the race committee decided to abandon the race. During a shore postponement the race committee observed that the conditions were continuing to deteriorate. Out of concern for the preservation of equipment and sailors we decided to not send B division back on the water and to call the regatta. Results posted are therefore for viewing only and are NOT OFFICIAL as a full regatta was unfortunately not completed. Thank you to the Maryland sailors for hosting the regatta and serving on race committee and safety/mark boat duty and to the UMBC team for allowing sailors to use one of their FJs and providing great large committee boat both days of the event. Also thank you to Annapolis Sailing School and J World Annapolis for the use of their facilities. Finally, thank you to the teams that came out to compete on a challenging weekend with beautiful weather, but wind conditions on both extremes of the spectrum. We hope you come back for Jeremy Pinkerton in 2017 to complete a regatta and continue to grow our event.

Score history

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
