Twelve women’s teams were welcomed to the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex for the 2014 Charleston Women’s Regatta. High pressure ushered in an abundance of sunshine, no wind, and many rounds of corn hole. Anxious and hungry to sail, teams launched their FJs and 420s at 12:25 and racing was underway on Crab Bank shortly thereafter.
Six 13-15 minute races were completed using W4s in a 6-8 knot sea breeze and ebbing tide which forced the India code flag to remain flying. Course 5 was utilized after swapping fleets in a building southerly breeze for the much anticipated last set of the day. Racing was tight however no protests were filed thanks in part to a seasoned team of judges including Becky Bestoso ’10, Brooks Clark ’13, and George Prieto.
Dense fog and calm offshore winds postponed the start of Race 9 until 1400. The ladies were rewarded for their patience as a balmy 10-14 knot breeze filled in from the west. Three 14-16 minute W4s were completed on Crab Bank in a growing ebb tide. The regatta concluded after the completion of Race 11 due to PR 18(f).
Congratulations to the Yale University Bulldogs for winning the 2014 Charleston Women’s Regatta. No protests or redresses were submitted. I’d like to recognize Brian Swingly, Ned Goss, Brooks Clark, George Prieto, and the CofC Team for managing a tremendous event under trying conditions.
