Racing started at 1400 after a morning of practice. Cal Maritime won both races to lead CSU Channel Islands by 4 points, two-time winner Maine Maritime is in 3rd place. Races were sailed in 12-18 knots of westerly breeze with heavy chop along with the ocean swells.
Five races were sailed in 7-12 knots of breeze that faded in the late afternoon. There were big ocean swells and less chop than Friday. Cal Maritime had another good day finishing the day 17 points ahead of a 3-way tie for 2nd between CSU Channel Islands, SUNY Maritime and first timers at the regatta, College of Charleston. Another first timer UC Irvine is just 3 points back.
Although the forecast was for light breeze and racing pushed up due to Daylight Savings Time, the races got off nearly on time. Sailing in flat water with 9-12 knots of westerly breeze, UC Irvine won the first race to make the points tight for 2nd and 3rd. Cal Maritime was second giving them a 20 point lead. College of Charleston was third. In the second race both UC Irvine and Channel Islands had bad finishes. In the final race which was won by Cal Maritime, College of Charleston passed SUNY Maritime on the last downwind leg to secure their 2nd place. SUNY Maritime was third. Thanks to Los Angeles Yacht's Tom Trujillo for great PRO work and club members for great race committee work and to the Port of Los Angeles for sponsoring the regatta
