Blustery spring conditions greeted competitors on the Thames River in New London for the Clark Open. A challenging day for Race Committee and competitors alike as the cold and shifting conditions provided exciting racing to start the day; spinnakers were disallowed after the first race. Three races were completed before lunch in a building WNW wind, 11-16 knots gusting to 23 and a 4-knot ebbing current. The afternoon conditions proved to be just as challenging as the gusts and ebb increased. Six races were completed for the day. Racing continues tomorrow.
Slightly warmer conditions greeted competitors for day two of the Clark Open. A NW wind 4 to 10 knots gusting to 18 shifted to the to the North after lunch. The strong ebbing current and highly visible pressure bands tested competitor’s meteorological knowledge to stay in phase and on the favored side. Thank you to Northeastern coach Jonathan Farrar and UNH coach Diana Weidenbacker for hearing protests. Additional thank you to the cadets of the Coast Guard Offshore team for running races and assisting with breakdowns. Congratulations to the Roger Williams Hawks for winning the Clark Open.
