America Trophy

Summary

Saturday, April 13:

Competitors were greeting to the Robert Crown Center today by sunny skies but slightly chillier temperatures than the week prior. Unfortunately the drop in temperature did not coincide with an increase in breeze. A short postponement was taken after the skippers meeting at 0930 to wait for the wind to fill. During the postponement, the nominees for the Purrington Award were listed. Gordon Wolcott from UVA, Della Bradt of Cornell, and Sky Kussmann from George Washington University were honored as nominees for the award with Sky Kussmann emerging as the winner. This award is given to the graduating senior from MAISA each year who has made outstanding contributions to college sailing through his/her efforts, not only by competing, but in the promotion of the sport, by fostering sportsmanship among teams, maintaining quality of competition, and contributing to the overall performance of our conference. The recipient is not necessarily the best sailor in MAISA but embodies the selfless spirit of true competition and commitment to excellence in support of college sailing in our conference. MAISA congratulates Sky and greatly appreciates all that she has done for the sport.

At 1000 both A and B divisions were sent out onto the Severn River just off of the Robert Crown Center and racing commenced in a funky Northwesterly breeze at around 6 to 10 knots. Six W4s were completed in both divisions before the fleets were sent in for a lunch break at 1300. Racing resumed in Annapolis Harbor off of Triton Light after lunch at 1400 in a building Southeasterly breeze. Six additional W4s were completed in champagne conditions before racing was called for the day at 1700. Two protests were filed on the day resulting in a DSQ in race 6B and a RAF in race 8B.

A huge thank you to guest PRO Gavin O'Hare and his crack team of Midshipmen for running races and to judges Hugh Elliot and Ric Crabbe for acting as on-the-water judges and for hearing protests.

Sunday, April 14:

Sunday was another picture perfect day for sailing at the US Naval Academy. Sunny skies, highs in the mid 60s and a northwesterly 5-12 knot breeze allowed for the rapid completion of the 6 remaining races per division. David Clinnin joined Ric Crabbe on the water and Gavin O'Hare and his team of Midshipmen completed all scheduled racing by noon. Congratulations to the top 8 for qualifying for the College Sailing Coed Semifinals at Hampton University on April 27-28 and to the Georgetown Hoyas for winning the 2013 America Trophy.

Score history

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
