A rough day one for competitors at the 2012 PCCSC Dinghy Championship hosted by UCSB. Warm, light and fickle winds plagued the course all day making racing nearly impossible. 2A and 2B races were completed by 4:30 when it was decided to call it quits for the day. The report time for Sunday was moved up to 8:30am in hopes of catching the morning breeze and getting a regatta in the books.
After a difficult day on the water on Saturday with gentle puffs of 3-5 knots and lulls that left the look of glass on the water, Sunday’s forecast didn’t hold much better optimism. The race committee opted for an earlier start hoping to catch what appeared to be a little better pressure in the morning and it worked in the favor of the racers and the regatta. With a mandatory three races needed per division and only two done after Saturday, stringing together some races became a necessity. Talk of alternative options for how to decide who would represent the PCCSC was in the air. Fortunately, a subtle morning breeze of 5-6 knots did come in and the race committee was able to complete two races for both the A and B division by the time the breeze began to die at 11:00am and finally withered to nothing 45 minutes later. The regatta was in the books, however the racing had been difficult in the light conditions. Fortunately a juvenile whale decided to grace the race course with its presence and make a few jumps for the competitors and onlookers which at least made the weekend a little more worth the travel. The temperature was nice and the sun was out which also made the ensuing onshore postponement all the more bearable for the next hour.
Surprisingly, the wind did come back up enough and from a consistent enough direction to give it another shot at 1:30pm. The sailors and race committee did an outstanding job of capitalizing on the breeze and got off an additional two more races for each division ending with a total six races for A and B divisions.
This regatta was a qualifier for the National Semi-Finals taking place in Annapolis, Maryland on May 12th and 13th and as the regatta continued on, the top three teams separated from the pack leaving one qualifying spot available to be fought over by Hawaii and UC-Irvine. It came down to the last beat of the last race with Hawaii opting for one side of the course and UC-Irvine opting for the other. A fantastic battle eventually won out by UC-Irvine and a win that would lead them to the final open spot in qualifying for National Semi-Finals. The top four teams move on including, Stanford (1st), UC-Santa Barbara (2nd), Cal State Long Beach (3rd), and UC-Irvine (4th). Congratulations to all of the qualifying teams and thank you very much to the Race Committee as well as scoring officer, Danielle Richards.
Respectfully submitted, Brad Schaupeter Principal Race Officer

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.
The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
