It was an interesting day at the 2011 MAISA Women’s Championship. The day began with overcast skies and a light southerly breeze that came shortly after the report time and shifted to the SW throughout the morning. The course was set in the mouth of the Severn River off Triton Point. A division started the day in FJs while B sailed 420s and five races per division were completed on the windward leeward course before a rain storm came through and took the wind away. After a brief lunch break, the fleet returned to the course to find that the sky had cleared and the wind had filled in from the south again. The divisions switched fleets after race 6 and the wind built in strength to 10-12 knots. A shift to the SE decreased the pressure a little at the end of the day, but still all 12 races per division were completed by late afternoon.
Racing remained tight to the end with the top three teams within a point of each other coming into race 12. After a close finish, St Mary’s came away with the one point victory and the automatic bid to the finals of the ICSA / Sperry Top Sider Womens National Championship. Earning the other spot were the 2nd place Herons of William Smith College. Earning a berth at the semi-finals were Old Dominion, Georgetown, Navy and Pennsylvania.
Many thanks to new dad LT Ben Herring ad his team of Midshipmen for running a great event and finishing early so we could all enjoy having a day off on Easter. Also thanks to Herb Larrabee for serving as an on the water judge and to Dick Morin for serving on the protest committee, even though no protests were filed on shore.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.
The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
