Greater New York Dinghy Regatta

The Faculty Advisors' Trophy is one of the oldest awards in College Sailing.

From the "Deed of the Gift' championship for the colleges of New York's metropolitan area was planned in 1947 but its inauguration was delayed by bad weather until the following spring when the faculty advisors of Cooper Union, Kings Point, New York State Maritime, Stevens Tech and Webb Institute, the five original contestants, presented a permanent trophy in the form of a plaque containing a half-model of the Interclub Dinghy. Hofstra will become a regular participant at the next championship, and other metropolitan colleges will be eligible upon joining the Association. It is as yet uncertain whether the Greater New York Championship, a two-crew event, will be held annually or semi-annually.

Kings Point hosted the regatta 39 times from 1948 - 1978, at which time the event was discontinued. In 2002, Fordham University, which had been away from College Sailing from 1974 through 1999, acquired a fleet of boats and resurrected the competition as the Greater New York Dinghy Regatta. The Faculty Advisors' plaque was found in a closet at Kings Point by then Head Coach Doug Clark, who transferred it to Fordham Coach Joe Sullivan. Three years later, after Fordham's fleet expanded from six to 10 boats, the event became a MAISA Open competition.

From 1948-1978, the championship was won by Kings Point 26x, Webb Institute 6x, NYS Maritime 5x and Columbia, Cooper Union and Stevens once each. Since its renaissance in 2002, Fordham has won it 5x, including this past weekend, Kings Point 2x and Columbia & SUNY Maritime once each.

After a sumptuous breakfast of bagels and cream cheese from H&H Bagels in Manhattan plus OJ and coffee, Saturday's racing started with 15-18 knots of wind from the west-northwest and gusts in the low twenties accompanied by two-three foot rollers and a strong current. Ten boats capsized throughout the morning and Breakdown points were awarded to Hamilton in B Division and Rochester in A Division. Due to a lack of a second experienced skipper for the heavy air conditions, Delaware wisely elected not to compete in B division. As the afternoon progressed, sunshine emerged providing a spectacular view of the New York skyline across Eastchester Bay. Gorgeous sailing weather continued with a steady 12-knot westerly breeze. At lunchtime, in between shifts on the water, sailors were treated to delicious New England clam chowder from the Shrimp Box on City Island and at the end of the day Zagat's rated New York City's Best Cheesecake from S&S Bakery in the Bronx. With a roundrobin of 20 races completed, 10 in each division, the event was curtailed at 6:30 PM following Saturday's competition.

Pennsylvania State University was a No-show.

Scores of Skidmore and Army include 20-point penalty per division for failing to print name & sign RP Form.

Fordham wishes to thank Columbia & American coaches Megan Marsh and Kyle Assad respectively for manning the Columbia safety boat, and Fordham sailors Joe Turchiano, Graham Gardner, John O'Riordan, Alex Sachs, Elizabeth Wegmann, Samantha Zimmer, Bridget Dalton and Claire Sullivan for helping to run the regatta by managing a myriad of necessary details to make sure that everything ran smoothly. And to Friends of Fordham Sailing Paul Laddomada & Maura Mandrano, a huge "Thank you" for allowing Fordham to use their spacious 35' craft as a Race Committee boat for the event.
