Moody Trophy

Summary

Saturday, September 28:

Day 1 of the Moody Trophy. Following a short morning briefing, A division sailors sailed through the narrows to find an oscillating easterly breeze ranging from 5-10kts. This direction can prove tricky on the Salt Pond, as oyster beds, shallows, and marine traffic all take precedence in such a small area of water. Nonetheless, a total of 14 races were sailed. The RC support team was busy throughout much of the day, altering the course to match 20 degree shifts.

First place finishes were awarded to many in the fleet today, with some using the shifts in their favor at various points in each race. Through most of the day, marks 1 & 2 were set just beneath Toby Point which often sheltered the sailors from the breeze. Those who made gains expertly negotiated this light spot, often shaking up the standings. All in all, the racing is quite close and finishes are very tight. An exciting event to watch.

After heading in, one scoring inquiry was filed which will be heard by a jury tomorrow morning before B division heads out. Well done to everyone, it was a long but successful day on the water. RC intends to run as much racing as the SI’s allow for Sunday.

Sunday, September 29:

Day 2 of the Moody Trophy brought a light and shifty easterly breeze, at times diminishing to just 4kts. This kept our mark boats very busy, changing the top and bottom marks over ten times throughout the day. After the second start in B fleet, RC elected to abandon the race to allow the wind to finally settle at 70 degrees ENE.

With so many geographical variables in play, it was a connect the dots kind of race course. Due to the low velocity, the course was shortened in length which led to crowded mark roundings with a nice even split at the bottom gate. Many found success, though it was the Brown Bears, RWU Hawks, and Bowdoin Polar Bears that seemed to most consistently master the right side. In the end, it was these three teams that made the podium.

Well done to all who traveled to the Salt Pond for this event, and congratulations to Brown for taking the 2024 Moody Trophy. A special shoutout to the URI sailors on RC support for their tremendous help, and to URI Captain Miles Bailey for ensuring the regatta was a success.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
