McMillan Cup

Summary

Saturday, October 19:

Cool temperatures, sunny skies and a large high pressure system was the weather for the opening day of McMillan Cup. Competitors were able to sail race one in a solid 7-9 NE breeze. The Charleston Cougars won the pin end and never looked back to win the opening race. The wind continued to fade throughout race two, starting at 6 knots and decreasing to 3 knots by race end. Shifting gears to accommodate the breeze the best was done by the Kings Point Mariners, who won the race by half a leg. After race two, there was a 1.5 hour delay as the race committee patiently waited for more wind to materialize. A solid NNE wind did refill at 4.5-5 knots. Two great races were held with several lead changes throughout. Two different teams found their groove with the Rhode Island Rams winning race three and the Maine Maritime Mariners leading the fleet in race four. The day ended with the Naval Academy Midshipmen and Charleston Cougars in a close battle for first.

Sunday, October 20:

Light wind persisted again on day two of the regatta. The fleet departed the dock by 0815 only to be greeted with a faint westerly wind. That quickly died out, but PRO Taran Teague patiently waited for breeze to develop. The RC was able to finally run a start at 1315 in a 5 knot southeasterly breeze. The ebb current caused three boats to be over early while the rest of the fleet punched off the line. Navy was able to lead the fleet around the course to win the race and clinch the regatta. The Charleston Cougars sailed a solid race placing third and second overall. Coast Guard and Kings Point had a tight battle in the last race but it was Kings Point taking a yellow flag and two penalty points that enabled Coast Guard to edge them out for third overall. Many thanks to PRO Taran Teague and her race committee team as well as Chief Judge Dan Trammel and the cadre of safety officers who supported the event.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
