Greg Popp Trophy @ ERAU

Summary

Saturday, September 28:

Saturday in Daytona Beach started with scattered clouds and nearly calm conditions. By the end of the competitors' meeting the winds were beginning to fill from the south-southwest at about 6-7 kt. The first race began at 10:31.

There was a very strong outbound tide all day long, enhanced with the rain from Helene draining from the Tomoka river into the Halifax River. The winds were initially steady in direction, but anything but steady in speed. As thick clouds passed to our south, at one time pouring just a few hundred yards from the race course, the winds dropped and filled across the course. This lead to some interesting stretches and compressions of the fleet across both divisions. Racing was tight, with multiple boats overlapped at the finish of every race.

Congratulations to the JU sailors, who took 1st, 2nd, and 4th today. The sailors from PBAU would not allow JU to sweep, and did a great job to take 3rd for the day.

Thanks to the Halifax Sailing Association for hosting our event and lending us the R/C boat. Thanks to Tim Dolan, President of the Sailing Club at ERAU, for running the Mark Boat. He and his crew, Chris Cunha, worked hard today, as we adjusted the course every three races while sailors rotated, and often adjusted parts of the course during each race. Thanks to Chris and Kathy Sinnett for operating the coaching-on-the-water pontoon boat. I heard great things. Thanks to Nate, Louis, Michael and Paige for your help on the R/C boat. This truly was a team effort!

Respectfully submitted, Chris Herbster / PRO

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
