Sailpack Women's Intercollegiate

Summary

Saturday, September 30:

Cool morning temperatures and warm bagels welcomed sailors to Lake Crabtree and a light breeze began to build as boats were launched and an opening ceremony/skippers' meeting was held at the picturesque Lake Crabtree waterfront tower. The sixth annual Sailpack Women's Intercollegiate Regatta presented by the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance began with the first race starting just after 10AM on a W4 course and prevailing winds from the northwest, a favored direction for this venue. Sailing in combined divisions, the home team Wolfpack secured the early lead with a strong first set from their B-Division while the University of Florida Gators followed closely with UNC-Wilmington and UNC-Chapel Hill falling into place thereafter. With a shoreline full of spectators, including parents enjoying NC State Parents' & Families' Weekend, racing continued with lighter breeze in the late morning building into a nice consistent flow in the early afternoon through the evening. Sailors completed three sets and then enjoyed a shoreside break with pizzas provided to all athletes by Sailpack parents, and ice cream from regatta event partner and NC State's own Howling Cow Creamery. A fourth and final set was completed and sailors were back ashore by 5:30pm. Two breakdowns were issued resulting in one boat decommissioned and a bye entered into the rotation after the first race. With the completion of 12 good races on Saturday, and an unfortunately light forecast for Sunday, racing was completed in a one-day event. The host NC State Wolfpack took the regatta win, joined on the podium by the University of Florida and UNC-Wilmington. Congrats to all and many thanks to all of the volunteers and supporters who helped make this year's Sailpack Women's Regatta a blast!
