The Hatch Brown Trophy

Summary

Sunday, September 17:

The Hatch Brown Trophy honors beloved MIT Sailing Master Harold “Hatch” Brown (BU ‘59). Hatch was an ICSA Hall of Fame sailor and coach as well as a Navy veteran. As a BU undergrad, Hatch won A division at College Nationals and as MIT Sailing Master, he coached several MIT teams to national championships as well as teaching thousands of MIT students how to sail. Hatch also had many impacts on the sport of sailing, one of which was as an early advocate of the penalty turn instead of automatic retirement for penalty infractions like hitting marks and fouling other competitors. who was a veteran, a champion sailor and coach, as well as a teacher and mentor to tens of thousands of sailors during his 30 year career at MIT. Hatch offered help and coaching freely to sailors on other teams, especially the student run teams which made up the majority of NEISA in the 1970's and 80's. Hatch and others put tremendous time and energy into building NEISA and college sailing into what it is today. To honor Hatch, please take a moment to appreciate the amazing opportunity to have fun competing at great venues, with great equipment, and with great people each weekend.

We had a great westerly wind 6-15 knots and warm sunny temps for the whole day. 21 total races were held, 7 in each division. Race length ranged from 17-20 minutes per race. There was one protest resulting in a DSQ.

Huge thank you to MIT Assistant Coach Aine O'Donnell who ran the finish boat with MIT first year Andy Yu and Katherine Jankowski volunteering as well. MIT Dockmaster Dan Tucker helped with breakdowns and Jeff Bresnahan of Connecticut College served as NEISA rep.

Score history

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
