Kilpatrick Regatta

The annual Kilpatrick Regatta, an event often known for big wind, was co-hosted by the University of Central Oklahoma Sailing Team and the Oklahoma City Boat Club. Indeed, the wind usually blows in Oklahoma, except when it doesn't...and this is what happened with in 2022 Kilpatrick Regatta. Saturday morning began with sunny skies and cool temperatures that rapidly rose into the mid-80's. Winds were out of the southwest at 6-8 mph for the first two races (A fleet) before continually decreasing during the next two (B fleet). As glassy conditions prevailed, all competitors were sent into shore for complementary lunches and to wait for wind to return. Unfortunately, nothing developed and no additional races could be sailed Saturday afternoon.

Sunday morning began as the day before, but the wind was only 3-4 mph out of the southeast and the forecast was for it to remain very light before it eventually died. PRO David Bass and the rest of the very experienced RC worked diligently taking wind readings and moving marks to set up a reasonable course as the A fleet left the docks. The race started in very light conditions and the wind dwindled away, with only part of the fleet finishing within the time limits. Lake Hefner again turned to glass and the regatta was called. Congratulations to the winning team from the University of Texas.
