A fantastic day on the Shrewsbury River!
This regatta is held annually in memory of John Quinn, who was a longtime supporter of the Monmouth University Sailing Team and a past commodore of the Shrewsbury Sailing & Yacht Club. John would certainly have been very excited to see the 11 teams in attendance today as the racing was close, but competitors respected each other and took their penalty turns when fouls took place - sportsmanship which did not go unnoticed by the Race Committee.
The breeze began the day out of the east at 8-10 knots but slowly shifted right throughout the afternoon while fluctuating between 5-12 knots, and ultimately ending up out of the southwest by the end of the day. While there were two minor breakdowns which were quickly fixed by the supportive Monmouth host team, the rest of the day went incredibly smoothly thanks to the cooperative weather and excellent help from the SSYC volunteers. Special thanks to John Garth for coordinating on land, Priscilla Gettis for her assistance on the start boat, Jim Widdis and Dave Usechak for their excellent mark boat work, and Talbott & Lee Ingram for both moving marks and acting as the finish boat for our W3 courses.
Ten races were completed in each division with a mix of W4 and W3's being run. With 11 teams in attendance resulting in a potentially odd number of races to complete the full rotation, the feeling was that the regatta should be considered completed as sailed with no further racing to be scheduled for Sunday. Webb Institute dominated the day behind an especially impressive performance from their B Division boat winning 9 of the 10 races, but strong showings were also had by the Princeton and Kings Point teams across both divisions. Congrats again to all the sailors and thank you very much to all of the volunteers who made hosting this regatta possible!
